Imagine Mass celebrated on a glacier. That is just one of the remarkable feats of the subject of our current archives exhibit, Father Bernard Hubbard, S.J., a missionary and explorer to Alaska in the 1930’s and 40’s.

Archives intern, Josh Slater, was inspired to create this exhibit through his work indexing the student newspaper, The Rambler. He was surprised to find the phrase “The Glacier Priest” several times during this project. This was enough to pique his interest.

When he wasn’t exploring Alaska, Fr. Hubbard toured the continental U.S., speaking at colleges about his travails. He was a pioneer in multimedia presentations, showing photos and film of his team’s endeavors and demonstrating mountaineering equipment. The dashing priest spoke at Rosemont five times. His presentations generated much excitement at the college particularly when he announced that he’d named an Alaskan ridge “Mount Rosemont."

Josh was impressed with Fr. Hubbard’s:
“...determination and enjoyment of his expeditions. He did not have to keep returning to Alaska, and did not have to research it. Even when the scientific community stated that he had accomplished little of value, he continued to travel and speak on it, because he wanted others to know just how amazing it was.”

Come see for yourself how amazing it was. Visit the Archive’s Exhibit Case by the Main Floor Stacks.

Bonus: The exhibit contains 2 original copies of The Rambler, one of which shows a photo of Patricia Kennedy (of the Kennedy family) as a tennis champion.Kistler Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12531076105312897003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673299968316332982.post-67324298714859599792018-03-28T11:12:00.000-04:002018-03-28T14:02:58.729-04:00Archiving Abroad: Archives in Jos, Nigeria
I spent all of my waking hours with the community of Sisters

opportunity to get to know the young women who desire to become Holy Child

locations in West Africa. Some of them were from local tribes near Jos, others
were from other parts of Nigeria (both east and west of Jos) and there were a
few from Ghana, another location in West Africa where the SHCJ are present. I
was warmly welcomed by everyone I met and they were just as eager to tell me
about their own homes and culture as they were to learn about my own. They were
such a welcoming group that I never even had the opportunity to be homesick.

to properly archive materials. We were collectively tasked with organizing the disheveled
collections of papers, photos, and other documents. I showed the Sisters the
best techniques for working in Archives and then we all worked together to
implement them. The Society’s presence in West Africa dates back to 1930 so
this was an amazing opportunity to work with materials that dated back to that
time period. It was also exciting for the Sisters to work there because in many
ways this history was something they only previously had been taught by word of
mouth.

Archives Assistant, Emily Siegel, ‘14, curated the first part of this exhibit, which portrayed Rosemont athletics from 1923 - 1960. It showed that women’s colleges were places where women could be athletic, in a safe, accepting environment, during a time when this may have been frowned upon in other places. This was eye-opening to me.

I hadn’t realized the novelty of this image until I saw it there. Diana and her sisters enjoyed their athleticism and physical strength. They were confident in it. I wanted to select photos of Rosemont students who were enjoying themselves, strong and proud and excelling in sports; who displayed the same attributes as those fictional women.

Title IX was enacted in 1972. Yes, we’ve come a long way, but women still strive to be taken seriously in the sports arena (and in others). I hope that this series of exhibits will encourage further thought and discussion on that subject within the Rosemont community.

She discussed his works of art that were on display prominently at the Exhibition. The piece that drew the most interest was very different from the rest of Frank Connelly’s work. Most of his sculptures were neoclassical style, women sculptures, while the piece that was the focus of the talk was much different. "Honor Arresting the Triumph of Death," is a group composition that features six different figures: Death, Death’s horse, Strength, Courage, Perseverance and Hope. In the summer of 1939, Rev. Mother Provincial and Rev Mother Ignatius traveled to Rome where the meet Frank's daughter, Mariana who later became Princess Borghese. During this process, the Archive staff realized that there was a need to have these items digitally preserved to aid in preservation and make them accessible online so that students didn’t necessarily have to be in the Archives in order to complete their research. Digitization is a big part of preservation in any archive. It ensures that duplicates of photos, documents, and other items are being saved so that if anything ever happened to the original copy we have a backup file to support the collection. Digitization projects also help us to see what in the collection might need extra attention in terms of preservation. Also, with the students building a website there was the desire to display some of the photos and documents online.

Against a black backdrop, a pair of pale, graceful hands cradles a ruby red apple. The title is subtly emblazoned between strong forearms in silver script. This is a depiction from an actual scene in the book and movie. Adroit Edward catches an apple fumbled by bumbling Bella. The image is also heavily metaphoric. An apple is easily bruised and battered, just like Bella. Not so while cradled in Edward’s marble arms. And let us not forget that an apple is the age-old symbol of the forbidden fruit, of temptation. Here, it stands not only for the temptation of first love and lust, but also for the temptations that the central characters are to each other. Edward must constantly resist his desire to make Bella at the very least, his most satisfying meal, or ultimately, to turn her so that she’ll join him in eternity. Bella avoids joining the Cullens, her strongest temptation, not through any effort on her part, but through the willpower of Edward and the rest of his preternaturally beautiful clan.

Unfortunately, it falls short of this potential. The writing is simultaneously awkward and overwrought. I found myself rolling my eyes and muttering “oh, please…” at Bella’s descriptions of Edward’s beauty, or at the happy couple’s proclamations of love. Bella’s emotional and physical ups and downs didn’t move me much. I found Edward and his family a bit more interesting, perhaps because they’re drop-dead gorgeous (haha) vampires.

This is one instance where the movie is slightly better than the book, probably because I enjoyed looking at the beautiful Pacific Northwest scenery. There is one stand-out scene in the movie: the baseball scene. I admit to exclaiming, “That is awesome!” when I first saw it. I love the music behind it and the whimsy of vampires playing baseball but only able to do so in a thunderstorm. I was eager to see how it was handled in the book. It was disappointing.

I’d read a similar book on Alice, especially if it were written by Joe Hill.

This is a story about words, spoken and unspoken, written and unwritten. This is a story about Harrison Shepherd, a private man of many talents who ends up in a rather public profession; he’s a best-selling novelist. One of the most compelling themes of this book is that what’s most important about a person is what you don’t know about him. At first these unknowns add to Shepherd’s allure and appeal. Later in the book, his blanks are filled in with perversions and untruths that devastate every part of his already agoraphobic life.

Lacunae feature prominently in this story, both literally and figuratively. Shepherd would dive into a lacuna between rocks in the sea during for respite during his childhood in Mexico. The life Shepherd presents to the public is filled with lacunae. A journal kept during his young adulthood conveniently goes missing, a convenient excuse to avoid writing his memoirs, despite his beloved Mrs. Brown’s insistence that he do so anyway.

This book is a critique of the media. Newspaper and radio reports feed off of themselves, repeating and sensationalizing, filling in any lacunae with unverified facts until they become “truth.” This is reminiscent of the image in the book’s opening paragraphs. Shepherd and his mother cringe in fear of the sound of the howler monkeys’ dawn vocalizations outside the hacienda where they first lived in Mexico. One howler would set off the next. Even after it was explained to them that the monkeys were establishing their hunting territories, boy and mother remain uneasy.

“Their food might be us, mother and son agreed. You had better write all this in your notebook… So when nothing is left of us but bones, someone will know where we went.”

Ironically, American newspapers and radio may only howl within a very limited range. The last third of the book takes place during the Red Scare and the time of McCarthy’s ominous Un-American Activities Committee. A narrow line separated “appropriate” expression from accusations of Communism. This line is especially narrow in the art world.

Such a myopic point of view angers Violet Brown. She argues that it is as if the powers that be believe America to be finished and perfect. Any hints that it could be improved or suggestions for progress are considered un-American. Any appreciation of different ideologies, behaviors or cultures is anti-American, therefore Communist, and therefore cause for investigation and legal persecution. This monster of an idea sometimes still rears its ugly head today.

I love that Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and their friend Lev Trotsky are major characters in this novel. The Riveras were Communist supporters, which didn’t affect them too much in Mexico, but did determine how and if their work was viewed in the United States.

Vivacious, vibrant, and often ill, Kahlo presents one of the novel’s most thought-provoking ideas: that the ancient Aztecs seem heroic to us moderns because they didn’t have written language. We don’t have any accounts of their quotidian struggles. All they left were their grand monuments, so we believe the that people themselves to be monumental; an example of the lacuna working in a culture’s favor.

Approximately 2/3 of this book takes place in Mexico. These are the parts that I love best. This setting allows Kingsolver to work her lyrical magic, describing the colors of the women’s clothes, the smells of the food and the flowers, raucous parties, and the light on the Aztec’s pyramids. For a time, Shepherd is employed as a cook and enjoys the task throughout his life. Kingsolver’s writing shines in her descriptions of food and belies her love of the topic.

I also enjoyed Shepherd’s first few years in Asheville, N.C. It seems very Arts and Craftsian and cozy. Despite WWII, America seems a hopeful place where everyone is united in doing their part for the war effort, as opposed to a few years later when there is much divisive finger-pointing as everyone is encouraged to rout out the Communists in their midst.

The passage entitled "On Your Leaving" are some of the most beautiful paragraphs I’ve ever read in a novel, a love letter that anyone should be delighted to receive.

The horticultural, special collections librarian and the Philadelphian in me were thrilled that Shepherd goes to the library with Romulus, the neighbor boy, to identify a wildflower using Bartram’s Flora of the Carolinas, which “had full-color plates of the specimen in question.” Romulus was disappointed to learn the true identity of said specimen.

I do think the book could have been a few dozen pages shorter, but overall, Kingsolver rightly maintains her position as Stephen King’s band- and shelf mate with this deep and rich novel.Kistler Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12531076105312897003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673299968316332982.post-45346051156345092242016-10-25T09:53:00.003-04:002016-10-25T09:53:45.722-04:00Staff Tuesdays: Sarah Bolce, Evening/Weekend Supervisor<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.61px; line-height: 18.915px;">Every Tuesday during the Fall semester, we will be introducing, or re-introducing, you to the wonderful (and adorable) Library staff that work to help students make the most of their academic experiences here at Rosemont College.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.61px; line-height: 18.915px;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.61px;">
Lowney will give the Presidential Lecture entitled "Doing the Laundry, Dirty Shoes, and the Monastery Bell Leadership Lessons from Pope Francis." With such an intruguing title, we are eager to hear his presentation.

Educated in the Jesuit tradition and for a time a Jesuit seminarian, he later entered the business world ultimately becoming a manager at J.P. Morgan, where he remained for seventeen successful years. Then after much thought, he decided to leave without a clue as to what he would be doing with the rest of his life. That issue was resolved when he started writing books and lecturing on leadership. His talks combine both his spiritual and worldly experiences in a captivating way.

To learn more about Chris Lowney, and Pope Francis, please stop by to see the Information Commons exhibit case on the first floor of Kistler Library.
She works with the Archivist to help develop exhibits, both online and for the Archives display case in Kistler Library. She also works with Archives patrons both on and off-campus to find items or information about specific students and events in Rosemont's past. When she's not working in Rosemont College's Archives, she is working at the SHCJ Archives next to Gracemere. Let's learn a little bit more about Emily:
Today, we will be highlighting the Information Commons Exhibit.

Check out Kistler Library's newest Rare Book & Art exhibit celebrating the 160th birthday of George Bernard Shaw. Born in Dublin in 1856, he was a “playwright, critic and polemicist.” Shaw was awarded a number of honors including the Nobel Prize. He died in 1950. Rosemont’s copy of his St Joan play was printed in a limited edition of 750. Its cover design is elegant and its pages are untrimmed. The illustrations in this edition were done by Charles de Sousy Ricketts (1866-1931), who is known for his work in the design of books as well as his work for the theater. This book resides in the Rosemont College Rare Book Collection.

Shaw is known for his “brilliant” quotations a few of which are shown here:

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

“No question is so difficult to answer as that to which the answer is obvious.”

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”

Please enjoy this exhibit through the end of September!Kistler Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12531076105312897003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673299968316332982.post-63368177458631563392016-08-22T10:09:00.001-04:002016-08-22T10:09:07.537-04:00Welcome Back!Welcome Back, Rosemont Upperclassmen!

Information about Kistler Library and all of its electronic resources, can be found on the Library's Website at http://www.rosemont.edu/library. Here you can access the Library's Databases, the Catalog, and Ask a Librarian for help.

In order to print in the library, you can must print from the library desktops or laptops located throughout the Library. Upon submitting an item to print, you will be asked to enter your Student ID number, which can be found on your Rosemont ID card. You will then be asked to enter your ID again at the Printer. Also, like last year, this service is still completely free.

In order to check out books, you must have a Kistler Library barcode on the back of your ID. For incoming Freshmen and Transfers, you must visit the Library Information Desk and request a barcode before you can begin to check out books and reserve items. For returning students that lost your ID, you must get a new ID from Public Safety before you can receive a new barcode.

For more information on Library Policies and Procedures, check out the Library Policies page on the Library's Website.

As always, if you have a question, please do not hesitate to ask a Librarian or Library staff member for help. We are always available to answer your question, no matter what it is.

And an official Welcome to our First Year and Transfer students! We are super excited to have you back on campus (it's been a very quiet summer and we've missed you).

As some of you may have realized, a few things have changed at Kistler Library since the Spring semester. Among other things, you may have noticed there is a new printing system in place for all library computers. Instead of printing directly from the library desktops and laptops, you are now being asked to enter your student ID number, which you can find on your ID card, both to print at the computer and to release the print job at the printer. While printing is still completely free, this will hopefully help streamline the printing process and limit printing jams, while also allow us to act on the campus' green initiatives. We appreciate your flexibility in learning this new system and, as always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask a Librarian.

Watch for more posts next week about other exciting changes and upcoming plans for Kistler Library!
Since the start of Rosemont College, there has been an
obvious need for a campus chapel. Initially a makeshift chapel was set up in a
room of Main Building. Then, in 1926, the chapel was moved to the basement of
the recently completed Gertrude Kistler Memorial Library. Mother Mary Ignatius
Carroll, SHCJ, second college president, was nicknamed “Ignatius the Builder”
for her devotion to grow Rosemont’s campus saw it her duty to build a chapel.
After struggling through the Great Depression, everyone on campus strove to see
M.M. Ignatius’ dream actualized.

The College finally received permission to construct a crypt
in 1939 with hopes that it would eventually become a chapel after making
numerous pleas for consent. M.M. Ignatius made the voyage to the Sisters of the
Holy Child Jesus’ motherhouse in Rome and received permission for an ENTIRE
chapel. Sadly, she did not survive the voyage back; however her dream for a
Rosemont College Chapel was accomplished. On March 19, 1940, ground was broken,
presided over by Cardinal Dennis Dougherty, Archbishop of Philadelphia, and
Mother Mary Cleophas Foy, SHCJ, the College’s president. The Chapel of the
Immaculate Conception was completed and dedicated on January 9, 1941.

The building was completed by Philadelphia Architects, Henry
D. Dagit & Sons, while Matthew McCloskey & Company were builder and
general contractors. The Chapel was constructed in a cruciform shape, set on
the traditional east-west axis. The exterior walls are a combination of local
Foxcraft stone, trimmed with Indiana limestone. The roof is constructed of
steel and concrete slabs covered with Vermont slate in shades of grey and
green. Above the entry to the vestibule there is a limestone statue of the
Immaculate Conception. The tower houses the Chapel bell, which was a gift from
Miss Mary Clare, friend, benefactor, and trustee to the College.

The outer doors are of oak and just above the front door is
a bas-relief representing the Descent of the Holy Ghost. The interior walls are limestone and the
construction is based on the stone vaulting of the centuries old cathedrals and
churches in Europe. The main altar was originally located at the back wall of
the apse but was later moved, in 1969, to be more central following the changes
made to churches and chapels by the Second Vatican Council. The Chapel’s crypt,

Ministry.
