Enter the Name Your Favorite Book Contest, Win $200!

Everybody has a favorite book. One that has entertained them, touched them, changed the way they look at the world. Share yours with us in the Name Your Favorite Book Contest sponsored by the Friends of the Gertrude Kistler Memorial Library. The contest is open to all current Rosemont undergraduates. The rules are simple:

• Submit a 150 word essay on your favorite book.
• Place your essay in an envelope addressed to Mrs. Janine Surrichio, President of the Friends of the Library. Deliver it to the Information Desk in the Library by November 17, 2014.
• Judging will take place on December 3. You will be contacted if your essay is selected and asked to come to the Library to share your collection with the judges. You will be contacted in advance of the judging to set up a convenient time for your presentation. Each participant will be given 15 minutes.
• First Prize: $200
• Second Prize: $100
• Third Prize: $50

Good news! The submission deadline for the Art of Reading Photo Contest has been extended to April 16. The contest is open to all current Rosemont students. Submit photos of yourself or others reading around campus. Be creative! Winning images will be displayed at the Library. All submissions will be added to the Rosemont College Archives digital photograph collection for posterity. Official rules and guidelines are listed below and are available at the Information Desk in the Library upon request.

Spring contest is open February 3 through April 16.

Prizes for Fall/Spring editions of the Photo Contest are $100 for 1st prize and $25 for 2nd prize. Contest open to all students. All submissions will be added to the Rosemont College Archive Digital Photograph Collection for posterity.

1. Eligibility:  All current students of Rosemont College are invited to participate in the Art of Reading Photo Contest
2. Dates:  The Art of Reading Photo Contest will be held once a semester during the 2013-2014 academic year. The Fall portion of the contest opens on September 19 and ends November 26. The Spring portion of the contest begins on February 3 and ends April 16. Late entries will not be considered eligible for awards.
3. Judging:  Submissions will be judged based on style, execution, and relevance to the topic of literacy on campus. Judging is anonymous. The judging panel will consist of three library staff members.
4. Awards:  First prize: $100. Runner up: $25. Winners will be notified via email. Winning images will be displayed in the library and on the library's website. All submissions will be admitted to the Rosemont College Archive Digital Photograph Collection.
5. Conditions of Participation:  All submissions must be original content. By entering the contest you agree that the submitted photograph is of your creation and no other party can claim ownership. In addition to displaying the winning photographs, all entries may be posted on the library's webpage, social media sites (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.) and subsequent material. By entering the contest you agree that the library has unlimited use of your submission.

Do you collect books on a particular topic, by a favorite author, or of a particular genre? Enter the Undergraduate Book Collector's Contest, sponsored by the Friends of the Gertrude Kistler Memorial Library. The Book Collector's Contest is open to all current Rosemont undergraduates. The rules are simple:

• Submit a 250 word essay on your favorite book collection (concentrate on the focus of the collection). Textbooks may not be entered. Books mentioned in the essay must be owned by the participant. Address your entry to Mrs. Janine Surrichio, President of the Friends of the Library. Deliver to the Information Desk in the Library by November 27, 2013.
• Judging will take place on December 3. You will be contacted if your essay is selected and asked to come to the Library to share your collection with the judges. You will be contacted in advance of the judging to set up a convenient time for your presentation. Each participant will be given 15 minutes.
• First Prize: $200
• Second Prize: $100

Ink Blot Challenge Results

Thank you to everyone who participated in our "Ink Blot Challenge." Congratulations Erin Wright! You won 3 free books at the Library's Book Sale.

In August the GMKL staff presented the "What Do You See?" display introducing the Rorschach Test, more commonly referred to as the "ink blot" test. Students and patrons were encouraged to reveal what they saw in the 10 ink blots. Interestingly, no one answer was repeated! Instead of the most common answers the GKML staff have decided on the following:

What Do You See?

Come to the Library to visit our Psychology Themed Display, titled: What Do You See? The display introduces the Rorschach Test, more commonly referred to as the “Ink Blot” test.  The Rorschach test is used as a psychological character evaluation. Six of the most popular ink blots are displayed on the bulletin board. Test yourself against the most common answers. Search Credo Reference to learn more about the Rorschach Test and how it is used.

We will reveal the most common answers for each of the 10 ink blots on Sept 26^th via this blog and announce the Book Sale winners.

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2012 Book Collector's Contest

The winners of the Undergraduate Book Collector’s Prize were announced on December 3 by the Board of the Friends of the Gertrude Kistler Memorial Library. As was the case last year, deciding winners among very interesting collections was very difficult.

The top prize went to Laura Watson whose focus is on horror and science fiction genres, books which “inspire us to confront our vulnerability…..allowing a better insight into our true psyche.” Her collection centers on books by famous American and English writers: Ray Bradbury, M .R. James, Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft.

The second prize went to Alexa Perotti who described her collection as part dystopia and part historical fiction. With her collection she has “taken many adventures to different worlds and different time periods.” Included are The Luxe series; the Tithe series; The Mortal Instruments series; and The Bar Code Tattoo.

Honorable mention went to presentations by Diana Hamlin, Eric Willi Nicholas Schaefer, April Hawkins, and Michael Greico.

Enter the Undergraduate Book Collector's Contest

Do you collect books on a particular topic, by a favorite author, or of a particular genre? Then you should enter the Undergraduate Book Collector's Contest sponsored by the Friends of the Rosemont College Library. Your collection could earn you the first prize of $200 or the second prize of $100. All you need to do is write a brief essay and make a presentation about your books.

• A 250 word essay explaining the focus of the collection is due on November 21, 2012.
• The essay should be placed in an envelope addressed to Mrs. Janine Surrichio, President of the Friends of the Rosemont College Library, and submitted at the Information Desk in Kistler Memorial Library.
• Presentations will be held in the Library on November 28, 2012.
• You will be contacted regarding your scheduled time.

The Library invites all Rosemont Students to enter our ongoing Art of Reading photo contest. Submit photos of yourself or others reading around campus. If you win you will receive a cash prize of $25 and have your photo displayed at the Library. A new winner will be selected each month for the duration of the school year.

Sumbissions for the November portion of the contest will end on Friday, November 16, 2012. A panel of impartial judges will choose the winning image on Monday, November 19. The winner of the photo contest will be notified by email on the November 20.
